Taught by Miss Allyson, tap & jazz classes at North Star Dance Studio follow the International Dance Teachers Association (IDTA) syllabus. For those who wish to, there is an option to sit exams, and all pupils are encouraged to perform in the annual show. Tap and jazz are two separate disciplines, but are combined into one class, with roughly half the class duration spent on each.
Tap & Jazz Class Gradings Explained

Primary Tap
This class is for pupils in P1 and P2, and is a half-hour tap class only (no jazz at this age). Students get a great introduction to the rhythms and timings used in tap, so they can progress up through the levels when ready.
Grades 1-5 Tap & Jazz
As pupils progress through these levels, and their skill sets improve, more complex moves and timings are introduced. Older pupils also get the opportunity to try “heels” which is always met with great excitement.

Senior Tap & Jazz
This is the highest level offered to our oldest, most experienced pupils.
Adult Tap (coming Autumn/Winter)
Adult tap is for all ages and all levels of experience. The class mixes elements of IDTA syllabus with individually choreographed exercises. In the past, some adult tap students have gone on to perform in the annual production, but this is NOT a requirement of the class. Each student works at their own level, taking the session as seriously (or not!) as they like.
Adult tap will return to the schedule in Autumn/Winter and will operate a Pay as You Go payment option, rather than 6-week invoicing.
FAQs
Do I have to wear a uniform?
Whilst there is currently no set tap & jazz uniform, most pupils wear their ballet clothes as they come straight from ballet class. Please contact us for full details of what shoes are required for each class as different age-groups use different shoes. It is essential that pupils wear comfortable clothes that are easy to move in (e.g. leggings and a t- shirt).
